Two qualified, passionate music teachers — a pianist and a violinist, married, with a combined decades of teaching experience in Singapore. Their individual stories below.
Ms Tan is often described as a patient piano teacher by parents of her music students. With over 18 years of teaching experience, she knows the importance of patience in motivating and inspiring her students — whether they are five years old or returning to music as adults.
She holds the Licentiate of The Royal School of Music (LRSM) and dipABRSM in piano performance, along with Grade 8 theory from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Institute of Education.
Her musical training was shaped by lessons with various distinguished teachers — including renowned pianist Boris Kraljevic and Dr Eleanor Tan, Deputy Head of the Music Department at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts — and a masterclass with German pianist Beatrice Berthold.
Prior to her career as a full-time music teacher, Ms Tan was a lecturer at a Singapore junior college. Today, alongside teaching, she remains an active piano accompanist for violin, trombone, clarinet and flute students at music examinations and concerts. She has performed as a chamber musician with the Chamber.Sounds ensemble at Jazz in July at the Esplanade Concourse, NUS Lunch Time Concerts, and at the former Library@Orchard.
Mr Ng Wei Ping is a distinguished violinist and an active presence in Singapore's music scene. As a seasoned performer, he brings a wealth of concert experience directly into his teaching, guiding students of all levels with musical instincts sharpened on the professional stage.
He has served as concertmaster of the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra since 2018, and has also been appointed concertmaster of the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Musician's Initiatives, and the Orchestra of the Music Makers. Internationally, he was invited by Volker Hartung to perform over fifty concerts across Germany and Australia with the Cologne New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and frequently collaborates with world-renowned conductors and artistic groups including Tan Dun, Anthony Inglis, Arnie Roth, the Korea National Opera, and the Tokyo Disney Orchestra.
As a chamber musician, Wei Ping is a founding member of the Nanyang Collective and Chamber.Sounds, and a regular member of the Resound Collective since 2019. He actively champions local music, having given numerous world premieres for chamber works and operas by Singaporean composers — including performing Kelly Tang, Leong Yoon Pin and Goh Toh Chai at the International Society for Music Education World Conference.
Wei Ping holds a BA (First-Class Honours) in Music from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he received the Best Graduate Award and the Embassy of Peru Award for outstanding achievements across multiple music disciplines. He studied under Foo Say Ming and Alexander Souptel, with deep stylistic influences from Prof. Ulf Schneider and Prof. Oliver Wille. As a student leader, he served as concertmaster of the NAFA Symphony Orchestra, including at Germany's Bötersheim Music Festival.
Wei Ping plays an 1881 Justin Poirson violin, generously on loan from the late Mr. Rin Kei Mei and Mrs. Rin. That depth of professional experience translates directly into the studio — every student learns from someone whose musical instincts are continually shaped by an active life on the stage.
A glimpse of one of Mr Ng's recent performances. Beyond teaching, both of us continue to perform — Wei Ping as concertmaster and chamber musician, together as the L.O.V.E Duo, and across orchestras and ensembles in Singapore.
