What you'll learn

Piano lessons here are not just about playing the notes correctly. From the first lesson, students develop posture, hand position, finger technique, reading skills, and β€” most importantly β€” an ear for musicality. The curriculum follows the ABRSM Practical Piano syllabus, but the lessons are personalised to your pace and goals.

For young beginners (ages 3–6)

We use age-appropriate methods to introduce keyboard geography, basic rhythm, simple melodies, and the joy of making music. Lessons are kept short, engaging, and full of variety. Parents are welcome to observe.

For school-age children & teens

Most school-age students follow the ABRSM graded path β€” Initial Grade through Grade 8. Each grade builds technique, sight-reading, aural skills, and a curated set of repertoire pieces. We also prepare students for the Singapore National Piano Competition and Music Elective Programme entry where relevant.

For adult learners

Many of our adult students are returning to music after years away β€” or starting completely fresh. Lessons are paced around your schedule and goals, whether that's learning a specific piece, working through a grade, or simply playing for leisure. As Ms Tan often says to hesitant adult students: it's never too late to begin.

Pathway to diploma

For advanced students, we offer preparation for ABRSM diploma examinations β€” DipABRSM, LRSM, and beyond. Ms Tan herself holds the LRSM and dipABRSM, and has guided multiple students through these milestones.

TeacherMr Ng Wei Ping

Learn from an active performer

Mr Ng performs regularly with the Artsylum String Quartet and Chamber.Sounds ensemble, and was featured by the National Arts Council in their "From The Living Room" series. This isn't just biography β€” it directly shapes every lesson. Students benefit from a teacher whose musical instincts are tuned by ongoing concert work.

What we cover

  • Posture, bow hold, and proper instrument support
  • Intonation training β€” listening, adjusting, refining
  • Tone production: bow speed, weight, contact point
  • Reading, rhythm, and aural skills
  • Scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises
  • Repertoire from baroque to contemporary
  • Performance preparation and stage confidence

For young beginners (ages 4–7)

We use 1/16 to 1/4 size violins as appropriate, with parents involved in early home practice. The pace is gentle and the goal is for the violin to feel like a friend, not a chore.

For students preparing for exams

ABRSM examinations from Grade 1 through Grade 8. Each grade is approached with care β€” we don't rush through repertoire. A grade well-played is far more valuable than a grade barely passed.

Chamber music & ensemble opportunities

More advanced students may be invited to play in small ensembles β€” violin duos, trios with piano, or quartets β€” both for the joy of it and for performance at our annual Music for the Young concert.

Music Theory

Why theory matters

ABRSM requires Grade 5 Theory before students can sit for Grade 6 or higher in practical exams β€” but theory's value goes far beyond that requirement. It teaches students why the music sounds the way it does, and turns them from players into musicians.

What we cover by grade

  • Grades 1–3: Notation, pitch, rhythm, key signatures, basic intervals, and elementary harmony.
  • Grades 4–5: Chord recognition, transposition, more complex rhythms, terms and signs, and short compositional exercises.
  • Grades 6–8: Advanced harmony, four-part writing, score reading, melodic composition, and analysis.

Group lessons available

Theory can be taught in small groups (2–4 students) at the same level β€” often a more affordable and socially engaging option, particularly for school-age students preparing for the same exam session.

For our own piano & violin students

Students learning piano or violin with us often add theory once they approach Grade 5 practical. Because we know your repertoire and progress, theory lessons can be tailored to reinforce exactly what you're encountering in your playing.

Beyond the syllabus

Not every student wants to sit for exams β€” and that's perfectly fine.

Music Appreciation

During school holidays, we sometimes run music appreciation workshops where students listen to, discuss, and learn about great works of music β€” from Bach to film scores.

Leisure Playing

Many of our adult students β€” and some children β€” come to us not for exams but simply because they want to play. Lessons are built around the pieces and styles you enjoy.

Accompanist Service

Ms Tan provides piano accompaniment for instrumental students sitting for ABRSM Grade 5 and above (violin, flute, clarinet, trombone). Available for both exams and concert performances.

Performance Pathway

For students who love performing, we provide multiple opportunities throughout the year β€” culminating in our annual Music for the Young student concert.
